Exploring High Falls State Park — My Favorite Georgia Escape

Inside the Gift Shop

One of my favorite spots to unwind and reconnect with nature is High Falls State Park, tucked away just outside Jackson, Georgia. It’s an easy drive from Macon — only about 30 minutes — which makes it perfect for a quick getaway when I need some fresh air and a reset.

The first thing you notice as you enter is the sound of the water. High Falls is named after its gorgeous 135-foot waterfall that crashes into the Towaliga River. Even before you see it, you can feel the energy. On my first visit, I couldn’t believe we had something this beautiful right here in middle Georgia. Every time I go, I’m reminded why I love this park so much.

My favorite way to spend time there is hiking. The park offers a few trails that give you different views of the falls and its surroundings. The High Falls Trail is a must — it’s about a mile and a half and loops along the riverbanks, leading you past rocky ledges and through wooded areas. Every twist and turn reveals new angles of the falls that I never get tired of seeing. For a gentler walk, the Historic Trail is short and easy at just half a mile. It takes you past old mill ruins, which are a neat reminder of the park's past life as a bustling 19th-century industrial town.

And if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, the Tranquil Trail lives up to its name. It’s a lovely, peaceful hike through the forest where you can lose yourself for a while and really listen to the birds and the breeze.

When I go with my dog, it’s even more special — pets are welcome, so my pup and I can explore together. It’s a big part of why I enjoy this park so much. Being able to share the trails and scenery with my four-legged buddy adds to the fun.

If you like water sports, there’s also a big lake where you can rent kayaks, pedal boats, or go fishing. Plus, if you want to stay overnight, they offer campsites and even cozy yurts with decks and grills — I’ve camped there a couple of times, and waking up surrounded by all that green is a treat.

Whether you want a simple picnic, a serious hike, or just to admire one of Georgia's prettiest waterfalls, High Falls State Park is an incredible place to visit. Every time I leave, I feel lighter, less stressed, and more grounded — and my dog looks equally happy, too. If you ever get the chance, take a day and experience it for yourself. You won’t regret it.
